Interview with Dream Wife about “Dream Wife”

DW 27ret sm

でも“F.U.U.”

-――We are super excited to see Dream Wife’s show this summer at SUMMER SONIC!! First of all, let us talk about the song “F.U.U.”; the music video was released on International Women’s Day and it also got many of Japanese music media attentions. Why did you particularly choose “F.U.U.” as the message from the band that delivers on International Women’s Day? What was your intention / expectation for the release?

“The big secret is that F.U.U. is actually written about a bad hair cut. F.U.U is an angry song and anger is an emotion which society doesn’t really allow women to express, they get called ‘bitch’. At the end of F.U.U we all scream BITCHES together and the reclamation of that word and that rage is cathartic and we want to share this catharsis. “

――-The music video is remarkable that’s because it clearly shows the message of liberation / empowerment of women but yet it expresses the earnest feministic voices in a pop entertaining way, so that the video could even get attentions of people who don’t really care about the topics, and make them want to share it without giving assertiveness. What made you decide to ask EVE to appear the video? Would you share some behind-the-scenes stories? Let us know if you’ve got interesting reactions.

“We were actually introduced to EVE by our label, who thought it might be something that would work with our vibe potentially. Once we had been to see the EVE show, these powerful women wrestling, we knew it was something we could work with but we definitely didn’t want our video to just be a thing of aggression for the sake of it, we wanted it to show female solidarity, friends and fans coming together with us in the ring, and the wrestling from the EVE girls being an extreme force within that. Bad bitches owning it, together, and having a wild time in the process.
We worked with our collaborators and friends Aidan Zimiri (director) and Paulina Russo (styling) to create a world that was cheeky and playful, while still packing a punch….literally.
Icelandic rapper and old friend of Rakel’s, Fever Dream, flew over to partake in the ringside action too, she raps during a breakdown in FUU and we sometimes play this song live with her if we are all at the same festival or in the same city. It’s always special to be reunited with her, especially in the wrestling ring. She’s a boss. “

You’ve done variety of activities as the band Dream Wife since 2016, but just made your official debut this year. As “MeeToo” and “Time’sUp” movements show rapid expanding these days, the band may have often introduced as in a way a hero of our time. What do you think is the significance of your activities as the band that holds feminist policy in this era, 2018?

“We’re just 3 women speaking our truth and we are very lucky to be making this art at a time where there is space for our voices to be heard. When we were growing up in the 90s there was very little in the way of feminist discourse or examples of female musicians, especially in rock and it’s so exciting seeing this change. For us it’s just doing it, wholeheartedly and not giving a fuck about how society dictates our gender should behave. It’s crazy that’s still a radical thing to do as a women, but hopefully the kids growing up now won’t have to fight so hard. “

――On the other hand, many problems that have been brought up by “MeToo” or “Time’sUp” are something we can say that’s universal, fundamental and has been unresolved for a long time. Such as Riot Grrrl in the 90s, Peaches’ electroclash in the 2000s and Poly Styrene from X-Ray Spex have all been fighting against such sexisms, but do you see yourself as a band that has taken over the fighting spirit of this movement?

“We definitely feel engaged in this wider conversation surrounding feminism, sexism and smashing gender stereotypes. We don’t want to shy away from this conversation and feel like it is our duty in a lot of ways to be addressing these issues and challenging the status quo. Riot Grrrl is a movement that happened almost 30 years ago now, we aren’t a riot girl band, however the fact we still get compared to and asked about Riot Grrrl now, only proves the point of just how vital these conversations still are for women and female identifying people, in music and in general -how can we still be asked the same questions in interviews about being a woman in music that Kathleen Hannah was also being asked back in the 90s with Bikini Kill, it’s like have things really not changed that much for female musicians in 30 years? We need to keep pushing the standard, equality should be the standard and the more normalised the conversations surrounding feminism become the more things can change, we need to keep chipping away at this, and not let that drop. “

――Have you had the same concept for the band since you started Dream Wife as a project for your art collage? What made you aware of these types of issues in the beginning?

“When we started out we were really feeling this project out as we went. We were doing a lot of international DIY tours at the start, just us three wives sleeping on coaches, doing our own sound at shows, booking tours from friends and contacts we had at the time. It was really hands on, and this major sense of solidarity within the unit came about in a strong way from those particular tours in a way you can’t really predict. This was or thing, and we couldn’t stop doing it, figuring it out as we went. The more we took our music out to places that maybe weren’t so embracing of women playing loud aggressive music, the more we came across the sexist cliches, people expecting you to not be able to use your amp, one guy after a show said that we better practice because in ten years our looks will fade. These are only two examples of many, generally not being taken seriously, just because you are a girl was what taught us to dig our heels in rock it even harder. It definitely gave us a drive to prove people wrong all the more. We figured a lot of this stuff out along the way, by getting ourselves out there, and seeing what we could do on our own. Now, given the platform that Dream Wife now is, we want to address these issues and make gigs and music a safe and accessible space for women and female identifying people to engage with and feel a part of.”

――You’ve shared the band policies with us here, but I think even without the topicality, Dream Wife music is enchanting, and the edgy and catchy sounds has power to simply attract people. What were the specific things that inspired you when you find your own musical style? If you have any keywords, references, or wonderful encounters you’d like to share.

“For us the cross over between pop music and rock music has been exciting, bands like The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Strokes and The Cribs were major inspirations for us when we were teenagers, it was rock music but it was also really really fun, it could address issues but also didn’t have to take itself too seriously. There was something so accessible and inspiring about those bands in particular when we were getting into music on our own for the first times. When we play together as a band it’s a crazy energy sometimes, where you all trust what each other can bring to the equation musically, and you just roll with that, it’s an instinctive thing for us, but this basis of rock music that was super fun still feels like it informs us, we take what we do seriously, however we don’t take ourselves seriously, there is something really liberating about that as our attitude musically. “

――The album ‘Dream Wife’ is like a compilation of your works that shows your growth as a band. What kind of album is it for you?

“For us it’s like we just gave birth to our first child. We love it. We are still understanding it now, it’s still growing.
It was an amazing thing to be able to share all of these songs with everyone who is willing to listen, the reaction to the album has been incredible so far, the subject matter we are touching on and the energy on the record has definitely touched people, these songs mean something to them, to us, and that is a very special and precious feeling, it’s like a conversation, and that’s what this is all about. “

―― “Somebody”の “I am not my body / I am somebody” というラインが印象的ですが、この曲はどんなきっかけで生まれた曲なんでしょうか。

――I love the impressive line from “Somebody” that says “I am not my body / I am somebody,” please tell us the background how you come up with the song.

“Somebody came out pretty much fully formed in the practice space. It was written in the wake of Reykjaviks ‘slut walk’ 2 years ago; so many friends sharing heart breaking stories of sexual assault but there is so much power in the sharing of these stories. When bad things happen to you the instinct is to hide those dark parts in the shadows but healing happens in the light and with Somebody we are bringing our own experiences, our friends experiences into the light. ”

――“Let’s Make Out”では、“Let’s make out / Let’s make out / Or are you too shy?”

DW「“Let’s Make Out”はセクシュアリティの讃歌よ。

――The emotional shouts in the song “Let’s Make Out” really hit me. What kind of feelings did you try to capture in the song / try to express to the listeners?

DW「Let’s make out it a celebration of sexuality. It’s about grabbing life (and that cute person you’ve had your eye on) and taking life by the horns.」

――Going back to the song “F.U.U.”, you collaborated with a rapper Fever Dream, and she has such a strong presence. How did you guys meet each other and what is she like as an artist?

“Vigdís aka Fever Dream is an absolute FORCE, one of the Baddest Bitches we know. Rakel and Vigdís used to work together in Iceland and had the idea for a collaboration, which we got underway a few years ago when we went over for Iceland Airwaves. When the planets align and we all end up in the same place Vigdís joins us on stage and the energy is phenomenal, it always gets unchained.“

――Probably the circumstance of the band have dramatically changed through these two years, and it‘s not hard to imagine that there are some shifts in your mindset. Compared to the very beginning of the band, which part of yourself do you think has grown the most as a musician?

“We are all working hard to look after our bodies, our minds and each other. We want to honor this position, it’s about taking the music seriously but not ourselves. Health looks different on everyone and is not a linear progression. It’s all about the positive trajectory but heavy learning curves and taking things that have gone wrong as a chance to find new solutions. It’s about learning and growing and being kind to yourself and everyone else. “

――In recent years, UK music scene has become lively and especially guitar rock bands are reviving. South London based indie rock bands including Dream Wife, The Big Moon, Shame or Goat Girl are all getting big attentions as a surging scene even here in Japan. What’s your perspective on today’s UK music scene? Do you get motivated by other bands from the same generation?

“There is so much exciting music happening in London these days and amazing so much of it is making it over to Japan! But the funny thing is we are actually on tour so much these days it hardly feels like we are in London at all! Shame are such a sweet bunch of boys, we spent a lot of time with them at Laineway festival in Australia, feels like they are our little bothers. But far more likely to see them on the festival circuit this summer than in London.”

――Lastly, would you name some songs or any other things (such as novels, movies, dramas, stories, or arts) that empowered you, please share them with us.

“We love the way women are portrayed in the works of David Lynch, there are some seriously powerful and complex characters at play and to see women on screen who aren’t the standard Hollywood fit is really refreshing and a majorly inspiring.
The book FoxFire by Joyce Carol Oates was really empowering to read as this loner teenager, its about this girl gang in New York in the 50s who don’t take any shit and give each other stick and poke tattoos and stuff. I used to wish I was in that gang, but then I found my wives. So hey, I guess it all worked out, find your girl gang and hold on to them. Start a band with them. They’ve got your back.”
