Berlin Issue: Interview with Isolation Berlin

IsoB_01

You need a new trigger (kicks) to change you, save you from your unfulfilled ordinary life. Isolation Berlin, a German post-punk band based in Berlin will likely be the trigger to change the reserved band scene in Germany. Their second album, “Vergifte dich” (Poison yourself) was released this year in February and illustrates the poison that hides within a society and its people. This makes it sound like a harmful album, but the message within is solely positive, and people who know of any type of conflict cannot help but sympathize. Ranking 30th in Germany’s Offizielle Deutsche Charts with their debut, and inviting over 1,300 people for their live in their hometown Berlin, they continue to move forward in Germany where band movements have been dwindling. We unravel Isolation Berlin and the German band scene that surrounds them – all from the perspectives of core guitarist/vocalist Tobias Bamborschke and guitarist/keytarist Max Bauer.

–First, please tell us briefly about how your band came to be.

Tobias: “In the summer of 2010, my friend from my theater school that I used to go to introduced me to Max. We clicked right then and there, and decided to start a band together.”

Max: “2012 is when we officially started performing live, and in 2013 our bassist David Specht and drummer Simeon Cöster joined us. And here we are now.”

–Are there any artists who have connected you two, or changed your lives?

Max: “Richard Hell. One day when I was in high school, I saw a documentary about him by chance when I was about to head to school. I saw that he quit school to go to New York and start a band, and thought, “that’s it.” After that, I quit school and came to Berlin at 18. Tobi (Tobias), we listened to him together a lot in the beginning.”

Tobias: “We used to cover The Jesus & Mary Chain and Johnny Thunders a lot together, and also listened to The Velvet Underground and Marge Star. We had very similar preferences in music, isn’t that a must for two people to form a band?”

Max: “I was always looking for someone who had similar music preferences. At school, everyone listened to metal, and I didn’t have anyone to talk to about music that I enjoy.”

–Your lead single “Kicks” is sharp in its lyrics and music, and is the most prominent post-punk single. It came in #3 in Germany’s college charts and is often played on the country’s radio. I’m interested in the song’s background and how it came to be.

Tobias: “It’s a song I wrote right when I wanted to start something new. They were private feelings of wanting to live feeling fulfilled, wanting to get out of horrible feelings. I’m singing that you need a new kick to change you, save you from your mundane and unfulfilling daily life.”

Max: “When I first heard the demo I thought it was similar to DAF, like a “German New Wave”. We finished it together at the studio by adding on everybody’s ideas, but the original aggressive feeling hasn’t changed, and I believe it has become even more of a song you can dance to.”

–I heard “Melchoirs Traum” was influenced by German playwright Frank Wedekind’s Play, “Spring Awakening” (Frühlings Erwachen). Tell me about the content of the lyrics and how you discovered the play.

Tobias: “It is a symbolic song that focuses on not only the protagonist Melchior of “Spring Awakening” but on the perpetrator who has killed someone, and on the nightmares of the people who continue to live while carrying guilt. They see their own finger in front of them, but cannot control it. They kill, and while they are tormented with guilt, they ultimately try to end the situation with “I’m not guilty.” I came across this play when I played Melchior at a play in my theater school 10 years ago. Ever since then, I have wanted to write about this feeling of guilt. When talking of guilt, Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment” is also a crucial novel. I had a nightmare after I read it. But I was finally able to finish writing after that.”

Max: “We didn’t have a title for it in the beginning. It was different from our usual lyrics with a good vibe, but like the lyrics, the melody took a long time to create. It ended up being born through improvisation in a studio during rehearsal. It’s my personal favorite among our recent releases.”

IsoB_05

–Tobias, you debuted as a lyricist last year and now oversee the lyrics for the band. How do you usually write lyrics?

Tobias: “Every day I write something in a notebook and wait for ideas to come to me. Ideas can arise when I wake up, when I talk to people, when I stay home watching television for 3 days straight.”

–I like your analog style of writing in a notebook. Do you not use social media usually?

Tobias: “I used to use Facebook, but it was a bad influence for my creativity so I quit. I don’t look at other people’s information, and I don’t want to. I call it the “information diet”. Just like white bread and fast food, I don’t need unnecessary information. Like good books and songs, I’m satisfied with information that is good for my brain. If you’re not careful, you won’t be able to focus on anything. Who cares for a video on dancing cats?”

Max: “You shouldn’t give out information with no content. Even if it’s by a little, decreasing how much you use it will help you tremendously.”

IsoB_06

–The audience at your live performances varies and ranges from the youth population to the new generation, and LGBT couples. How do you feel about being supported by people beyond their ages and genders?

Tobias: “Our music feels like telling a story rather than a band. Simply making a story and music, without other flashy things. We look at not only the feelings of the youth but of anyone. Because there are such various stories and music, you cannot categorize the music into a single genre like garage or punk. I think these aspects reach the wide range of our audience, and I’m very happy about it.”

Max: “I feel that there are a lot of musicians that care about looks, genres, and attitudes. Just recently, there were 13-14 year olds at our show. I think they got their parents to sign a parental consent form and came to see us. There were people in their 70s, and if my grandmother can get in, then even 90 years old. It means that the music echoes beyond attitudes.”

–Why do you move the audience so much?

Tobias: “Because it’s good music, haha. I believe there are similar conflicts that many people feel, no matter your age or gender. Love and worry, guilt, loneliness, loss. Whether you’re 5 years old or 98 years old, everybody has problems they keep to themselves, and they feel conflicted.”

Max: “If Isolation Berlin had existed when I was 16, I would definitely have loved it, haha.”

IsoB_07

–By the way, is there a reason you commit to singing in German?

Tobias: “It’s simply our native language and the only language in which we can express things well.”

–In a situation where hip-hop and R&B score the top 10 worldwide, why did you decide to do a band?

Tobias: “I’m not at all interested in that kind of music, and have never liked it. We don’t do the band to make it to mainstream in the first place.”

Max: “I like guitar music, so bands were the only option for me.”

–Do you remember what kind of music was trending in Germany when you were a child?

Max: “US pop and hip-hop. Guitar music was also more familiar compared to today. During the early 2000s, indie bands like The Strokes and The White Stripes were mainstream. But by the time we started the band, guitar bands were gone.”

Tobias: “No Doubt would play on the radio a lot. Also, music television shows like MTV were important in getting to know guitar music. There were also documentaries streaming on bands like Nirvana.”

IsoB_08

–What do you think of the band scene worldwide today?

Tobias: “Seems like there aren’t any particularly big movements. If there are, maybe the U.S.”

Max: “Especially LA. On the west coast, the garage-type bands. I also feel that the UK has been heavily influenced by the U.S. For instance, don’t the UK girl bands these days especially sound like the ones in the U.S.? But this generation is difficult for guitar music, so it’s hard to succeed.”

Tobias: “I also imagine U.S. band players to be playing in different bands for support, and working together.”

–How about in Germany or Berlin?

Tobias: “Germany is independent. People don’t try to interact, and they’re all rivals of each other, haha.”

Max: “Even if not everybody is, we all see each other as enemies haha. I’m joking.”

–It’s the complete opposite, isn’t it? When do you think was the best era for Berlin’s band scene?

Tobias: “Probably the late 70s or 80s. I think that period was the most exciting.”

Max: “The early 80s were when the German New Wave like Malaria! and Palais Schaumburg were popular.”

IsoB_09

映画は『In den Gängen』。

–Techno and electronic music is especially mainstream today, but we want to show that there is a band scene in Berlin too, and that it continues to be successful today. Anyways, I heard you both like to read and watch films. What have you read or watched recently?

Tobias: “F. Scott Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise. For films, In den Gängen. It’s a story about someone who falls in love with a woman during a nightshift at a supermarket, and begins to live a new life. I liked the atmosphere of the film more than the story.”

Max: “William S. Burroughs’ Junky. Also, Fabian by Erich Kästner is a late 1920s novel about Berlin. The political topic that relates to our time and the circumstances then are very interesting.”

Tobias: “Yeah, Fabian is good. I like how it’s funny and sad.”

Max: “Yeah, it links a bit to the music we make. As for films, I saw a documentary on Ryuichi Sakamoto called Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda. I like his music. I learned about his songwriting and his battle with cancer from this documentary.”

–Lastly, tell us about your plans for the near future.

Tobias: “We are currently working on creating our 3rd album. One song has already been finished. It’s a song that makes you feel funny and sad at the same time.”

Isolation Berlin /
The Velvet Underground、Joy Division,The Smithに通じるポストパンク、Sonic Youth、Primal Screamを彷彿とさせるサイケデリック・ノイズ・ロック、若き日のFrancoise Hardyのような60’sビート/シャンソンといったテイストを取り入れている。

Isolation Berlin
A German, post-punk band based in Berlin, regarded as the “Best new German band”. Incorporates post-punk elements such as by The Velvet Underground, Joy Division and The Smith, psychedelic noise rock reminiscent of Sonic Youth and Primal Scream, and Francoise Hardy’s 60s beats/chanson from his young days.
