Interview with Ken Miller “Gallery Target 10th Anniversary”

——You curated this exhibition for the 10th anniversary of GALLERY TARGET. Would you tell us how you met them?

I met them about 10 years ago, when they just opened. I used to edit a magazine called “TOKION” – it was right then we sold “TOKION,” and I did two books pretty quickly. The second book was called “Shoot,” and it was a book of the photographers who worked for “TOKION.” I started to talk to Tomoko and Keiichi about helping to do an exhibition here. And from then on, I’ve done about five exhibitions, so one every other year.

——What kind of images do you have for GALLERY TARGET?

Um… at this point, I’m friends with them, so I have so many images [laughs]. I’m pretty personally connected. But I think they are really good at introducing artists, and having really good tastes. There is a certain type of artists who get brought over, over and over again. And I think they are little more imaginative.

——Are there any exhibitions that you did here that are especially memorable?

The show they did with ESPO recently… I mean, it’s not that recent any more, but that was really good. We did a show together not in GALLERY TARGET but at a larger space that was sort of a temporary space, with Marcelo (Gomes) who is one of the artists on this show, Taisuke Koyama from Tokyo and two other artists. It was just a very very beautiful exhibition. And the biggest thing we have done was a project with Fujifilm where we got several really legendary photographers to shoot new photos with their cameras. So everyone from Ryan McGinley and Terry Richardson to Nan Goldin and Stephen Shore to William Eggleston, who shot digital for the first time. We showed those photos all around the world and had a big party at Omotesando Hills. That was a really amazing project…

——I assume your curation work has been increasing in the past ten years. Do you think your relationship with TARGET had changed during those years?

I don’t know if it’s changed. I mean it’s grown. We collaborated a lot over the years. So I’m very appreciative to them, because I’ve gotten to work on really good projects that I wouldn’t have been able to without them. So the “Shoot” show, was the first one and it was at PARCO. I’d never done an exhibition that large before I worked with them. And “Pictures” exhibition which is the exhibition with Taisuke and Marcelo, was visually one of my favorite things I’ve ever gotten to work on. And of course the Fujifilm project, because it was global, involved such prominent artists and got so much attention… They just have given me opportunities to work on really good projects. So I’ve gotten to learn a lot doing that.

——You have done a lot of curation work as well as editorial and branding. What have you been working on recently?

My background is editorial, but I always joke that curation is basically editorial with a lot less transcription [laughs.] I mean, it’s sort of the same thing, you just pick things. For magazines you decide who you want to feature. For exhibitions, you just work with the people you want in your show. You just don’t have to type as much.

——[Laughs] That sounds nice.

It is nice! I’m never going back [laughs.] I do a lot of curation for clients. And through that, I just started consulting with them. I have this idea that with a brand, you can either advertise to people, or you could support the things they are actually interested in. And I always thought that it was a better use of money. it’s more positive. If you support some culture that people really like, they would actually connect to a brand, and really connect and care about it. Because then, you know they expressed interests in something you care about. It’s how relationships start.

——You started curating because you met many artists through editorial work?

Totally. And because of the brands that supported TOKION. There is an attitude towards being an editor/curator where you want to hold everything at a distance. I never worked that way. I tend to work with some artists over and over again. There are people I’ve interviewed five times. So during TOKION, I think for me, part of what I really liked about it was, we actually had really strong relationships with the artists. And when I left, I thought whatever I would like to do next, I want to continue working with these same artists.

——When I was a reader of your magazine, I was always wondering how you can make business out of it, because it was so over the edge. And now you are successful as a curator with different clients. How do you do it?

[laughs] That’s a good question! I don’t have a good answer for that.

——I guess it’s about supporting what you like?

Yeah, I mean…[Laughs] I don’t have a good answer. I think about that also. I know my taste in terms of what I want to curate is not always necessarily what companies want. But I still end up with a crazy range of clients, from people who are obviously very adventurous, like Adidas supported this (GALLERY TARGET exhibition), and that makes sense. But I’ve also gotten to work with clients that are way more “corporate”. I mean, I’m happy, because my attitude is to always help them support something good. Generally, it can get weird in the middle sometimes, with some clients who don’t totally understand what they are getting into. But usually at the end… I mean people working at companies still are people, and if the project is cool and other people like it, they are usually happy.

——Sometimes, I have clients who speak in different languages.

Oh yeah, always. But I think in a way it’s good, because if we spoke in the same language, they wouldn’t need us.

——I think when you were working with different artists for TOKION, there were many talents in New York. Some of their works have been changing, but do you think your relationship with them changed as well?

Oh yeah, totally. It’s the same as with friends. There are people you feel super connected to for super long time. And then, sometimes over time, their interests change.
Actually, I have one more thought. I always think people focus on New York a lot, and that’s partially because, for art, it’s a very good place to be. But I tend to think more in terms of a cultural community that can exist in lots of different places. It can exist in New York, but also Tokyo or Berlin. So in a way, it’s not so much about New York, it’s just about being part of that community and staying connected to people. Which I think is something I share with GALLERY TARGET, that idea.

——I felt that when I went to New York. If you meet one person, you can meet most of the artist.

Totally. It’s small world. I mean Tokyo is kind of the same. It’s big, but it’s actually small.

——It was probably easier to meet new talents when you were younger, but now that you are a curator, how do you get to know artists or find new talents?

Through artists. It’s always been the same. Before it was through magazines, now you can find people through Instagram. But I still find that people… if they are good or you’re connected to their work, there are always only a couple of degrees of separation from someone you know.

——As you said, it is easier to find new talents now with the Internet. What do you think of the influence that the Internet have on the art world?

I think it’s mixed. I think there are things that are good. The art world is much bigger now than it was ten years ago. I think that’s really good. More people look at it, and more people feel they can understand it. It used to seem very scary to people, and it doesn’t seem to be scary to people now. But the bad side is… well, it’s same for everything on the Internet and social media, where you can look at things without actually engaging with them. That could be bad for the community. I think it’s important to still have that real connection.

Ken「

——It seems that the artists in Europe are not into Instagram that much, but I’m surprised how New Yorkers are into it.

It’s New York, which is all about marketing. You have to be “part of the thing” [laughs.]

——What do you think of the art scene in New York today? I feel like it’s becoming interesting like 15 years ago.

I don’t know. I feel weird comparing in that way. I think it’s good, but I think it’s a little different. But I think there is a lot of good energy. Galleries are moving to the LES and Chinatown, and everything is happening in Bushwick. It sounds kind of silly, but the Brooklyn party culture kind of died for a little while, and now it’s come back a bit, and maybe that helps art. People kind of need to party to meet each other to make good art.

——I believe that when politics get bad, art gets better.

I guess that’s true. But I think the thing with New York is that the whole city got very expensive, so that made it hard for artists. But what is kind of amazing is that every year in New York everyone is always complaining about how expensive to live there, and then artists still move, artists still live there and artists still make it cool. I’m from New York, so for all my life I’ve seen how, every year, everybody is complaining like “oh, it’s done,” but it still keeps going.

——On this exhibition, there are artists from different cities and countries. What is the concept and how did you select the artists?

Mostly it’s really about GALLERY TARGET. It’s either artists with whom we’ve worked together, or who we really love. I didn’t really think about the geography of where artists are based. Like I know Chris since when he was really young living in San Francisco. So I didn’t pick him because he lives in Portland, I picked him because he’s somebody I have a connection to, and I know GALLERY TARGET loves him. It’s super simple, just artists you like. They really look good together. I’m really happy with all of them.

——Which art form are you interested in nowadays?

I’ve been interested in the idea of not separating the categories so much any more. Even though I’ve been doing photo stuff, like Marcelo Gomes and Peter Sutherland, where it’s not traditional photography. There are some Japanese photographers like Yoshinori Mizutani or Daisuke Yokota, where it’s almost like photos painting. And I’ve been getting excited about that idea. I’ve been thinking less about the form of the creation, and more about artists’ visual intent.

——I’m interested in dance recently. Are you interested in performing arts?

I’m just not as knowledgeable. Yeah I like it, but I feel like if I try to curate something in dance or performance, I’d be totally faking it.

——So you only curate what you love and have knowledge of.

You sort of start with that, then you do research, so you could learn more. You don’t want to curate the same things over and over again, but I think you want to start based on your knowledge, for me at least.

——Would you tell us about your upcoming projects?

There are projects that I shouldn’t mention yet. But the project with the non-representional photos is something I’m most excited about right now, so that’s good to mention.

——Are you planning a exhibition for that project?

No, that one is basically expanded off the exhibition I did with GALLERY TARGET three years ago. And it’s turning into a book. And the other thing, I just did a book for The Newsstand. It’s my friend Lele (Saveri)’s project. The Newsstand is at Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris for the next six months. And this year, I set up a little store with my wife Sasha Laing, one in New York, and one in San Francisco, and there is going to be the third in Los Angeles early next year. It’s called Import News and we feature independent magazines, art books and also snacks and products from all around the world. So kind of like the art book fair, but all the time.
