Interview with Daniel Avery about 『Song for Alpha 』by PUNKADELIX

New OrderやJoy Division、My Bloody Valentineなんかを聴いていたよ。

Daniel「

Daniel「

——Courtesy

Daniel「

Daniel「

NeoL_DanielAvery_2 | Photography : Satomi Yamauchi

Daniel「

Daniel「

Daniel「

Daniel「

I’ve read some articles about you, and they were saying that you were into rock music before you started listening and making electronic music. What type of rock ’n’ roll music were you listening to mainly?

Daniel: Yeah, my first love was guitar music. So things like New Order, Joy Division, and My Bloody Valentine. I’ve always enjoyed psychedelic music. So that’s why now I think I love psychedelic techno music as well. I think it all influenced me.

ーーSo you especially liked rock music from the 70’s?

Daniel : Sure. I grew up like.. My father is a huge record collector. So He would always play music. So I’d always hear, you know, Rolling Stones, Beatles, and things like that. The house was never silent. Things like Black Sabbath as well. All those were very important to me.

My dad was a fan of rock music as well. He was listening to British psychedelic music and progressive rock music. So I used to listen to music like King Crimson, and then sifted to electronic music. I think we’ve got something in common in that respect. Do you still listen to other genre of music than techno or electronic music?

Daniel: Yeah definitely. I listen to other music than electronic music all the time. I couldn’t exist with just dance music. I’d go crazy. Haha. Recent things I really liked have been.. I really like new Mogwai album. And.. I love Deftones. They’re from California.

I’m a DJ, too. And I’m inspired by not only electronic music but also many other music. I think that has a big on DJ style. I can feel that especially from your DJ style. Your mix albums also had a big impact I think. We can see and feel the atmosphere of British underground music scene from those records. But British music scene is such fast-moving industry, isn’t it? What is important for you to exist in the scene as a DJ?

Daniel: I think it is important to build up your identity and let it grow always. I come to the conclusion recently that music finds you. Really. So if you have an open mind and make yourself surrounded with interesting people, and if you’re always curious, then you’ll always be true to yourself and music you love will always come true to you. For me, DJing is just about sharing music you feel excited about. And as long as you do that, you’ll always keep your identity.

ーーI can see the open mind from your DJ style. You’re never stuck in any specific thing. Does your attitude towards music change when you DJ and make music?

Daniel: I think it all comes from the same place. I do think it is the same. I guess producing allows you to explode and present more sides of yourself. But then again, with DJing, I can still represent yourself in different ways. And this is why I play really long set. It’s been really important to me recently being able to play the first record to an empty club, build the atmosphere from nothing, and take it somewhere else. Yeah, so I think DJing and making music share many many similarities.

ーーHow many hour set means the long set to you?

Daniel: Hmm…Can be anything. Well, 6,7,8,9 hours. I did 10 recently in London. But it’s not really about the length. The important thing is being able to do from the begging to the end. Sometimes it can be three hours to four hours but it’s been out of control atmosphere of the room.

ーーThat’s wonderful. You’re playing a long set tonight and I heard it’s gonna be back-to-back with Courtesy. Do you do back-to-back often?

Daniel: I’ve done it a few times. I’ve done it recently and has done it a few times with Andrew Weatherall. And DJ Nobu from Tokyo. We did it in London. Roman Flugel also. For me, the most important thing about back-to-back is that it’s two different energies coming together and creating something new. It’s not about trying to force each other’s style. It’s taking two things and making something new from them. So I really love doing it.

Some new chemistry can happen there. I heard it is your first time to do back-to-back with Courtesy. But you wouldn’t get nervous and just can enjoy right?

Daniel: Yeah. I’m excited!

ーーWhat do you think about Courtesy?

Daniel: I really love her as a DJ. I find her set very exciting. I’ve seen her play quite a lot and just yeah, it’s interesting because she’s from similar background to me. She started off like rock ’n’ roll music and moved to techno. So there’s definitely like similarity. Yeah, I’m excited to see what happens.

What can we expect from your set tonight?

Daniel: I have no idea (laughs). But I think that’s the exciting thing.

ーーNow let me ask you about your new album. I listened to your new music yesterday. I’ve been listening to your music since “Drone Logic” which was released four years ago, and I thought that the previous album was more like club oriented and the soundscape was more organic. But this new album is more like lyrical and melodious I felt. I thought there’s different drama in the new album but what was the idea or theme of this record?

Daniel: I agree, there’s more melody in terms of…Wait, let me think of the right answer (laughs). Yeah, so stories of those two records, “Drone Logic” was, I’ve been DJing for many years like 14 years or something now, and when I made “Drone Logic”, it was the time like still pretty much DJ first for me. And I was making tracks to play at clubs as a DJ. But since “Drone Logic”, I’ve spending so much time in the studio. And also I’ve been spending so many hours at night clubs. So I think the energy is flowing other way now. So now all the experience at clubs, I’m taking that to make something beyond club. There’s some element of techno on the record, but I wanted to make beyond that. So I take a lot of sound of club and influences but then hopefully added some other stuff. So that’s where the melody comes from all the ambience.

I totally feel that from the album. You managed to go beyond just club music. I got really excited by that, and could imagine a lot of images from the music. People often call your music psychedelic but I think I can see something softer and more tender and bigger from your music. More dramatic I think.

Daniel: Thank you.

I think the sound of your music very cool, but at the same time, it reminds me of something burning and moving like life. And the image comes to my mind.

Daniel: That’s really interesting because that was the whole idea of the record I had. Electronic, robot, computer music but with a human heart. With a human soul behind it. And the idea of moving has been a big influence of the record as well. I’ve been traveling a lot so been taken somewhere else was very important.

ーAfter I listened to the new album, that made me think that you could start making music using some physical instruments in the future. Have you ever thought about it? Would it happen?

Daniel: There are small elements on the new record. There are some bit of drum, and some voice, too. But very very subtle and deep buried in it. I started playing bass when I was 15 so I used to be in bands when I was younger. So… yeah (laughs). Maybe it happens (laughs).

ーーThe more you get not tech no or psychedelic, the more people want to get something real. I think that’s very interesting.

Daniel: I think so.

Do you know the reason?

Daniel: I don’t know (laughs). For me, like I said earlier, I couldn’t exist just with electronic music. I love it but it’s not 100% of who I am.

I see. Do you design the album cover as well? It’s aways cool.

Daniel: Yeah. That’s my idea. This time, there is another idea behind the album which is the light from darkness. Or like hope from fear. It’s not a political record at all, but particularly like in UK and US, there’s been lots of fear in politics right now. And for me, music is good escaping. Not just music. It can be films, friends or clubs as well. So for me, this album has been really positive force of my life which you can find that light from the darkness. That’s the artwork. You can see the fire in black. That’s the basic idea behind it.

ーーYou mentioned about fear in politics. Bur to be honest, for Japanese people, we can’t feel it directly. But it is a really big matter in UK for young people who go clubbing?

Daniel: Yeah, the whole Brexit thing. It’s based on certain right wing politicians spreading ideas of hate and fear like immigrants are bad or things like that. They tell people we should be scared and just should close your mind whereas my generation feel the opposite. We grew up international generation. I really want to promote that idea as much as possible. That why I love clubs. Because clubs are international and inclusive. So I think it’s a very small part but I want to do that.

ーーActually, we’re in the same situation in terms of politics in Japan, but there are less artist here who are trying to express that and tell people what they’re feeling. So I think it is a really good thing you guys have the opportunity and places to spread that idea.

Daniel: Why do you think it is different in Japan?

I don’t know. Maybe our personality is one of the reasons. Or education can be one, too. Even when Donald Trump visited Japan, we were silent.

Daniel: Yeah, I saw that. That was interesting.

ーーWe don’t like standing out because we don’t want to get attacked or criticized.

Daniel: I see.

ーーHere’s the last question. You’ve been at this position as an artist now, so there must be a lot off offers from other artists to make music for them or things like that. Is there any exciting news you can share with us at this point?

Daniel: Most exciting thing I’ve done recently is the collaboration with Alessandro Cortini from Nine Inch Nails. We’ve been making some music together. That’s the new project and which is exciting.

Have you got the name for the project yet?

Daniel: Not yet.

We can except even more new music from you.

Daniel: Yeah. Seems like it.

ーーThank you!

Daniel: Thank you!
