Interview with Jungle about “For Ever”

JUNGLE Credit Charlie Di Placido

–Before asking about your new album”For Ever”,I’d like to look back on the history of Jungle reading up to now,and ask about your debut album”Jungle”.It was highly placed album also nominated for Mercury prize and although debut album,it was full of Jugle’s essence, captured heart of many listeners in Japan from defferent genre.Looking back on your first album, what did the album mean to you?

“That album was very important part of our lives. There were a time that many failure of our band, there were a time me and Tom who is an old friend meet and go back together, so it was the music into real world and it was like some sort of improve ourselves. So I think looking back from now it connects people, connects me and Tom,connects me,our bands and their family. We play the gigs,it brings thousands of people who listening on the streaming services and buy our albums,it brings people too.Just think about it,You creat something in your bedroom and it’s gonna down that which is mind blowing,”

–The news album “For Ever” is even more variety of sound than “Jungle”,and I got the impression that the music was bigger scale and refined. What was the key ideas and key points that you kept on mind while you making this album?

“I think some of the key idea which catching my mind working on this album was “change”.
Some people might be scared of changing but it’s really important mind for us,you know, always keep changing. It’s hard because it’s more safe to remain in place but it’s not exciting and things stagnate. The important thing is that we get excited by our own music. Not making the music that people need but we need.I think that’s the key.”

–Personally I enjoyed urban and mellow tracks like “Cherry”and”give over”,or”Mama Oh No”which I can digital choir sound arrangements. What kinds of approach did you have for song writing and production?

“Song writing aspects on letting things happen and leaving emotions as naturally as possible, which is very difficult. Not trying to describe but let the song to be just happened. And production,it’s more technical so we need to think little bit more but still comes from the same place. We wanted to move away from the horns but still keep orchestra sound with strings for the romanticism. That based on the Hollywood in 50s and 60s,and idea of escaping in that place I think everyone who lives in popular culture all over the world pulls by Hollywood. Especially I lived in Hollywood so it was huge for me.There is a technique of playing strings which is called”smooch”,makes strings feel like woozy and little bit kind of dreamy I suppose, sliding from sound to sound. We always flying to one theme and run with it.About sound productioning,we doing beats and occasionally my cousin jump in,he will produce the beats and if everyone think it’s cool we use that beats.Thing like that brings new perspective, like inflo did.Collaboration with Jungle family is definitely influence to our direction of the album.”

『Why not?

–Can you tell us about inflo, how did he participated as a producer? He is known for woking on albums by The Kooks and Portugal. The Man.What kind of the elements and aspects did he bring to Jungle?

“Inflo and us have been friends for long time. And we invited him to our studio one day for listen our track, and he liked it.Just for that he got us feel confident of our music.at that point,we needed something for making the album,we have too many ideas and concepts so we need someone who saying “this is cool”.We were buried by too much ideas. We picked tracks and ideas and made a list,I think it was good for finishing. He didn’t participate all of the tracks, but he contributed to finishing this album. He is making music but he is doing in different industry from us.And we could hear opinion from kind of like that person. He got a lot of soul to this album and strong trust, open our eyes.Giving us the push by saying we can do anything we want.Even he said we can add the song like “House in LA” to the album, because “Why not?”,haha.”

–About the concept of”the post apocalypto radio station playing brake up songs”,where did the idea come from?

“This idea stands from a couple of places, really. When I was listening to Adam Curtis’s podcast,he said he use Brial music as a soundtrack of his documentary and I got inspiration from that story. And back then the concept of our first album is from “Grand Theft Auto”,the racing game.At the time we escaped into the world of games a lot,so it turned into be inspiration of our music at the result. We love the concept of “multitipe genre”.So it’ s like a switching radio stations,we flicking between sounds. While we seeking the radio station and listening to multitipe genre of music, and it actually became the whole album.Listening to ten tracks of album tells you a story and it become as a full album perfectly.Being in a car and listening to radio is something romantic and old that still exists from 40s 50s,regard of technology moving forward.I think radio and car keep existing, and it broadcasting many ideas to all over the world.”

“Heavy, California”でその土地へ行き、“Beat 54 (All Good Now)”へと続き、土地に到着し、順風満帆だ。

–Can you tell us events or musical references which became inspiration to make this album?

“Love and the cycle of love is massive part of that. That means,it’s journey. It started from”Smile”,and when you listen “Smile”,you feel like something will happen to you.The read character of the film walking down the street with confident I think it will happen now.The beginning of new story. And “California” is very much like you going to the place, move to “Beat 54”,and you alive in that place and everything all good.Yeah, that the story follows the arch of love,it’s similar feeling if you fall in live or someone broke your heart. It’s an energy, the heart describing the arch.”

–Songs like “House In LA”and”Home” have New Orleans sound,Jazz and Church music feel too them.

“I think “House In LA”is more like phychedelic and chinematic song, the body of movie concept is Wall of sound by Phill Spector.”House In LA”is a crazy music because the melody keep repeating which is so much of the romantic, and phrase keep changing is the concept of “House In LA”.It’s like an idea or past dream of“it could have been this.” “

–Before finishing up this album in London, you moved to Hollywood hills in LA and worked down the music for a while.I read that the experience doesn’t work all the positive,as you went though.Looking back on those times, how did that experience impact making of this album, and if that experience didn’t work as in positive way, what do you think that was?

“Well, for us,playing “Grand Theft Auto” when we worked on the first album was the massive inspiration because we got the idea, the depth of the world that creators made, and players can escape into that world and they can be any character whoever they want.In the real life,it was almost like escape being video games, especially we are from England and when you get to America, everything things bigger.Everything possible in America, that’s what people say.But I think as you settle in,atart to understand that the basics of the land.Fame,Success,Money-those exploding in “Happy Man”,it’s more hard to understand what the picture painted on outside.Shineshine is I think massive positive impact on me.it gives this album west coast feeling.I feel kind of energy from the sound by The Beach Boys,Crosby,Stills,Nash&Young. The sprit of vintage west coast,America.”

、“(More and More) It Ain’t Easy”は時間が経つにつれて好きになってきた曲。

–I’ like to ask about lyrics. Was there a theme or story which was consistent thorough out of the album?

“Yeah,as I said, theme of the lyrics is “Love”,falling in love, questioning what the person means to you.And also definitely “changing”is also the theme of this album, development and moving forward kind of thing. The sense of paranoia is always part of Jungle’s music.”

–Can you choose three songs from the album that you recommend personally?

2“CASIO”is one of my favorite. It’s Jungle’s sound but different sound of Jungle, you know. It’s the first time you hear the solo vocal and it’s my vocal. It’s first time that I really start to sing love,And also “Cherry”is also good one to listening to.I take more and more into”Easy”,it’s very personal song about losing somebody, physically from the world.I finished writing this song in 5minuites but I don’t know why I could do it.That song could be the most emotional one ever we made.”

–Lately there has been many singers, song writers and producers out of London of the new generations with modern take on blues,R&B and soul music. For example an artist of South London scene such as Tom Misch,Jimmy Isaac and Puma Blue are getting strong support from Japanese music fans.I’m interested in how you see kind of this movement, because I think Jungle also has many things in common with these artists.

“I think naturally R&B and soul music always influence people because they contain emotion. And soul music essentially means from the heart, rather than specific genre of music.Soul music can be any music. So if I can feel emotion from the music,I can sympathize.”

–Can you tell us some scenes or artists that you following lately?

“There is a band called “Khruanbin”they are from Texas, which is very beautiful music kind of like dessert instrumental. We’ve been big support of those guys. The hip hop moment is also massive inspiration like Kendick Lamar,PushaT.That album was really cool, you know Kanye West produced 5 albums which has 7 tracks long because you don’t really have as long the intension span of the audience in these days,so that concept can be able to get message acrossing seven songs rather than 25 songs.I think it’s much better.”

–This is the last Question. When introducing Jungle to Japanese people, they use this copy quite often, saying that “Noel Gallagher describe this album as fucking amazing”.Frankly speaking, how do you feel about that?

“Hahaha.I mean this is very humbling,I thought he might say that opposite of it.We were big fan of Oasis when we were teen age,so it’s great to hear that,it’s great to hear his support. They are one f the best band in 90s and still best band comes around. It’s massive honor.”
