Interview with Claire Milbrath “EDITORIAL MAGAZINE ISSUE 17”

IMG_1553

Claire「『EDITORIAL MAGAZINE』

Please describe EDITORIAL MAGAZINE for us.

EDITORIAL MAGAZINE is first and foremost a platform for emerging artists, designers, writers. It’s a magazine for artists and people who love art and want to know it more.

ーーCan you introduce yourself and your EDITORIAL MAGAZINE team to us?

I’m Claire. I live in Montreal. I like to paint and relax in bed. My roommate and BFF is Olivia Whittick, she’s the editor of the magazine. We have meetings in our kitchen in our pajamas. Our team is very small and everyone is close friends. We all have each our own careers in art, fashion, or philosophy. The women behind EDITORIAL MAGAZINE make me laugh, they are unpretentious and smart.

ーーWhat made you to publish EDITORIAL MAGAZINE?

I’m an artist myself, and I couldn’t find anywhere cool to publish my paintings. In Montreal I was surrounded by so many creative friends, with no place to showcase their talent. So I started EDITORIAL MAGAZINE, the first issue was like 5 contributors, all my friends who lived in same building with me.

ーーThis will be the 3rd collaboration between bonjour records and EDITORIAL MAGAZINE. How did the collaboration start? and what do you think of bonjour records?

I remember when Olivia and I decided to come out for the Tokyo launch last summer, we googled bonjour records like screaming “That’s where we’re gona be!” We were so excited. I feel that bonjour records is on the same page as Editorial. They are fans and supporters of people who make stuff. I think it’s really cool they bring so much amazing music, art, and fashion into Tokyo. People trust their taste and I can see why.Marginal Press the distributer introduced EDITORIAL MAGAZINE and stocked our magazine at bonjour records for the first time, like 2years ago! I didn’t know much about them, but Marginal Press would tell me how EDITORIAL MAGAZINE was popular at bonjour records. It actually wasn’t until I went there for the launch party, I was so stunned!

ーーCan you tell us a bit about the contents of issue 17? And what is your most favorite or recommended feature?

I wanted to really pack issue 17 full of fun stuff to look at. I wanted it to feel like a celebrity rag or Reader’s Digest. I love “Pretty Paws” which stars a poodle. I think the issue is funny, but there are serious pieces with important messages too. The same way it’s important to give undiscovered artists the spotlight, I think it’s important to share our platform with people who may be marginalized or typically unheard.

ーーIs there any particular theme or concept for issue 17?

We don’t ever have a theme other than the sentiment “Guaranteed to Build Strong Imaginations.” I hope that readers will find stories in the magazine that make them laugh but also make them open their minds.

ーーThe regular contributor Monika’s work is featured on the cover for the first time. How did it come to the cover work? and what do you think about this cover work?

I also love Monika Mogi’s shoot with the construction men. She always has the best ideas. She worked with artist Goichi Hosaka who collected images of the constructions signs in Japan. I think people in Japan are used to how cute their construction signs are, but when I saw them I couldn’t believe it! I think the Japanese construction industry should be the driving force behind looks for SS2018. I like challenging what we think of when we think of fashion. I don’t think it needs to be so self-serious. The Japanese construction men look chic, they look run-way ready. Aki, the man on the cover, has star quality. I love his charming smile and his Boss coffee. I think we should trade in our models for construction men. It’s one of my favorite covers.

ーーYou may already know but EDITORIAL MAGAZINE’s illustration logo by Clay Hickson is now very popular. We would like to know more about the logo. Can you tell us about the artist, Clay Hickson?

Clay Hickson is like Bob Ross. He’s kind and adept. It’s rare to find an artist with so much skill, who maintains a sense of humour.

ーーHe is also a regular contributor of poster supplement. How did you meet him ?

I happened to meet Clay Hickson right as I was starting EDITORIAL MAGAZINE. It’s just one of those life-changing moments you never forget. We became friends, and he actually taught me how to build EDITORIAL’s first website. I went to his house in the afternoons for a few weeks where he would show me how to make the website. His house was very cool, filled with weird mugs and Memphis design objects, just like in his art. I think he’s been in every issue since the beginning.

ーーWhat do you think of Clay Hickson for EDITORIAL MAGAZINE?

I feel like my relationship with Clay has helped define what EDITORIAL MAGAZINE means. It’s about friendship, and things happening naturally. Clay Hickson now has his own magazine, more like a newspaper, called the Smudge. It’s comes out monthly and all profits go to charity. Clay continues to inspire me.

ーーCan you explain about this illustration? What does this illustration mean?

About a year into the project, I was like wait, shouldn’t we have some kind of logo? I wrote Clay and asked him if he wanted to give it a shot. I didn’t give him any instructions. He sent me the bong lady illustration and I immediately loved it. He said it surmised the general vibe of EDITORIAL. I saw it as a self-portrait, a naked woman lounging with her weed bong. I remember when I showed the girls Clay’s logo they said there was no way I could actually use it. Everyone thought the logo was too X-rated. They said like “no one will wear this in public!” Clay and I discussed it, and decided to fuck it and just make the t-shirts and tote bags. I’m so glad it has become such a hit. Hehe the girls had no idea I would end up printing erect penises on t-shirts a few years later.

ーーLastly, please give your message to Japanese readers.

When I feel down, like sad and hungover, I think of all our readers in Japan and it truly warms my heart. It makes me feel so positive and excited that people across the planet understand what we’re trying to do with EDITORIAL MAGAZINE. I love you guys !
