ーー人の声の魅力、って何だと思いますか？
ハドソン「僕にとっての魅力は、声を楽器として使う時は、世界的に素晴らしいヴォーカリストに頼む必要が必ずしもないこと。たとえば、僕は全く歌えないんだけど、自分の声をインストゥルメンタル・レコードに使うことが出来る。実はこれ、僕にとってはとても興味深いアプローチなんだ。つまりそれを、人間の声には聞こえないように完全に変えてしまって、いろんなサウンドにできる。すごく興味深い方法だよね。で、それと同時に、今回たとえばミゲルとかジェネイなどのような本当に素晴らしい声を持っている人と一緒にやることは、僕にとっては目からウロコが落ちるような経験だったよ。これまで、そういう素晴らしいヴォーカリストとの仕事をしたことがなかったから……アントニーもそうだよね。本当に、美しい歌声なんだよ。そういう人たちと一緒にやるのは、僕にとっては大きなインスピレーションにもなったよ」
ーーそうやって生まれた本作の、最後の曲のタイトルが”ブラン・ニュー・ワールド”であるのはとてもポジティヴな気がして、興味深く感じました。
ハドソン「うん、これは……僕の古い曲たちをかなりレファレンスした曲とも言えるんだ。なぜなら、つまり、サンプリングをベースにしていた頃のヴァイブがある。面白い話があってさ、この曲で使ってるサンプルの権利をクリアにしようとしたところ……80年代のUKのグループなんだけど、彼らの返事が『メンバーの一人の甥っ子にビートの作り方を教えてくれたら、権利を認めてあげる』っていう（笑）」
ーー（笑）面白いですね。
ハドソン「ね、だから『オッケー』って（笑）。だから、このアルバムではたくさんのメロディーも作ったけど、同時に、サンプルをベースにした音楽、という要素もアルバムを通して使いたかったんだ。最近は、もうそういうやり方をする人は少なくなったからね。なぜかというと、もしレコードでお金を儲けたいと思ったら、サンプルを使うこういうやり方は、本当にバカげたことだから。で、このレコードのいくつかの曲に関しても、サンプルを使用したことで発生した使用料のパーセンテージを考えると、やっぱり、多くの人が『自分はこういうやり方はしない』ってことになるだろうなと思う。だけど、僕はこの曲を使いたい、これを入れたい、となると……10％ぐらいしか自分には入らなくてそれ以外の権利は渡さないといけなくなる。でも僕は、ただそのサンプルを曲の中に入れたいだけから、それでもやるんだ」
– I was seriously touched by “Warriors.” It reminded me that you’re from Glasgow and that is the place where so many beautiful melodies, great songwriters, musicians, and bands came from. Do you think your music is influenced by the city in any way?
“I hope so. (laughs) I mean, I think so. Traditionally, Glasgow is really a techno city, has some techno influences. It’s changing now because of people like Rustie, myself, and couple other people involved. I think people’s opinion of the city is changing because it’s for years and years, maybe for 25 years, it’s been sort of as very techno…”
– Techno, dance music, underground?
” Yeah. The rave kind of scene there as well. It really came from people who liked hip hop, but there wasn’t really a hip hop scene at all so they just ended up making dance music. So many people who were listening to hip hop but there wasn’t any club night for that style of music. There wasn’t any outlet for the genre. But people who actually liked hip hop were there. It just wasn’t really a scene, you know. So I feel like now people look at it more as there’s a little bit more scene there. Which is, you know, grateful to be able to be seen as a part of that kind of movement.”
– What do you think about the artists like Belle and Sebastian? That kind of beautiful and traditional Glaswegian music?
“Did Belle and Sebastian play last night?”
– Yes. They were amazing.
“I liked them a lot. And last weekend they played with Mogwai in Germany. I’m a big fan of Mogwai as well. There’s so much interesting very good music coming out of Glasgow. Chvrches are also from Glasgow, and there’s lots of interesting stuff happening there in the moment. It was very dry for a while. There wasn’t much happening. But it’s expanding again. ”
– Let me ask you one more question. What do you think is the attraction of human’s voice?
“The attraction for me is using it like an instrument, I think. So, like, not necessarily about having the greatest vocalist in the world all the time. I’ve done my own vocal some times. But I can’t sing at all. But if you can use your voice like an instrument, that’s interesting approach for me. If you can process it into something doesn’t even sound like human voice, and it completely changes, it’s really an interesting approach for me. Also, just… it’s an eye opening experience for me to work with, for example people like Miguel, who really have incredible voices. I haven’t had a great deal of experience working with beautiful, wonderful vocalists in the past. Antony as well, you know. Just the beautiful voice, you know. And then, having the opportunity to work with those people is really inspiring for me.”
