Interview with Sunflower Bean about “Twentytwo In Blue”

Sunflower Bean / Twentytwo in Blue (a-sya)(HSE-6730)

–Your new album ‘Twentytwo In Blue’ shows you’ve been spent extremely meaningful time
as a musician, and as an individual for the past two years while the society has been
exposed dramatic changes. How would you describe those two years since you released
the debut album ‘Human Ceremony’?

Julia “We have been through a lot as people and as artists. But there really is no line between us as artists and us as people at this point. All of the creative changes we’ve made have affected our personalities, and our interests as people have affected our music. We really wanted to do something different with our new record than ‘Human Ceremony.” We wanted to challenge ourselves.”

Jacob “Yeah, the two years or so between Human Ceremony and Twentytwo in Blue have been pretty insane. We spent so much time playing shows in different parts of the world and all over the US and gained a lot of inspiration from the people we met and the places we went.”

–‘Twentytwo In Blue’ reflects how you became confident in songwriting and playing as a
band. Also the storytelling ability and reality of lyrics made great strides compared with
“Human Ceremony”. Do you think which part of this album is the biggest change or
revolution for you? What is the achievement you’re proud of?

Jacob”For me I’d say the songwriting and production elements are a pretty big change. We were able to look more inward and really focus on making a solid song and then creating a sonic world for it to live in.”

Julia”I think we really just want the songs to stand on their own rather than think about the exact parts we are excited about, and not have to compare them always to “Human Ceremony.” I am proud of who we were on our first record, yet more excited by who we are now. And very much looking forward to who we will be on the next record!”

–‘Twentytwo In Blue’ sounds very authentic, has more classic rock/pop attractions. What
led you decide to approach the different style this time? What was the thing you’ve most
given attention on recording?

Julia”We wanted to pull away from so many jams, and some of the flashiness of screaming and moshing all the time. We still love to do that, but there’s also more to us. We wanted to let some of our more classic tones shine, and express our vulnerabilities more. On the recordings we really focused on giving my voice space to do what it should.”

–“Memoria” reminds me of the sound of Fleetwood Mac, and “Sinking Sands” put me in
mind of Neil Young. On the other hand, “I Was a Fool” is more like glitter rock, and “Burn It” has more classic rock vibes. I felt that there are various inspirations that are organically melt into the album. What were the specific things that inspired you when making those music? If you have any keywords, references, or wonderful encounters you’d like to share.

Jacob”Fleetwood Mac was definitley an inspiration for us specifically in the way that they are fearlessly creative. Especially in Tusk. That record inspired us to really chase any idea and follow creative instinct.”

Julia”When we wrote this album, we tried to grow each song like a different flower in a garden. Each one is different and requires a different kind of love and support. And they will grow to be different like they were meant to be and that’s a good thing! We love rock music and guitar music in our hearts, so our songs really follow the guitar in all of it’s different settings. Hard, glittery, quiet, emotional.”

–If you’d say there is a song that determined the overall direction of the new album, which one? And tell us the reason.

Jacob”I Was a Fool was one that we had kind of early on and it was the first one to get mixed so it definitely informed the rest of the record a bit. It’s funny because it is not always the first song that’s written that will kind of set the pace for the record. Burn It was the first song written for TTIB and it ended up changing the most!”

Julia”I agree with Jacob. “Twentytwo” helped us understand the record in a way, by realizing our age was one of the things that was affecting us, realizing that we are young and powerful.”

–This time you collaborated with Jacob Portrait from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. How did working with him influence the record and what kind of ideas/images have you shared for the recording?

Jacob”Yeah, JP was kind of the new eyes and ears to the situation. He was a huge help in fostering sounds and sonic realms to work in. He has a knack for getting unique sounds that have their own personalities and making them work in ways that you wouldn’t expect.”

–I clearly felt that the more the degree of maturity of band sounds increases, the more
expressions of Julia’s voice procreates. Here’s some questions for Julia,Are you aware of the stunning growth of yourself as a singer? Which part is the most positive changes for you? Do you have anything you’re trying to do intentionally on the singing?

Julia”Thank you for that sweet compliment! 🙂 I feel excited by the new things I can do with my voice. I feel like it was always inside of me, but for some reason I was afraid of it. Sometimes it’s hard to be yourself, because you can’t run from yourself, you know? So I finally feel ready to develop it and have fun with it even more!”

–And a question for Nick and Jacob,Please let us know how you feel about the changes of Julia’s singing style as the vocalist of the band.

Jacob”I love it! I think it was kind of this domino effect of each of us allowing each other to try things a little differently. It’s the best feeling in the world to be in band with people that you can feel free to experiment and try things differently. When Julia started singing like this it inspired us to arrange and write our parts a bit differently as well. ”

——“Crisis Fest”の「2017 we know/Reality’s one big sick show/Every day’s a crisis fest」「Every day’s a missile test」というラインには、前作からこの間の世界や社会の変化がもたらした時代の空気が生々しく捉えられています。

–I can name many masterpieces that have “Blue” in the title, such as Joni Mitchell’s
“Blue”, Miles Davis’ “Kind Of Blue”, Tom Waits’ “Blue Valentine”, and Massive Attack’s
“Blues Lines”. What kind of feelings or moods of this era did the album capture by putting “Blue” in the album title?

Jacob”For us the blue means more then sad or melancholy. When we were thinking about this record and what to name it and how to visualize it, the color blue kept coming to us. It represents the strength and the resilience that one would feel standing at the edge of a beach looking out at the blue ocean and the blue sky. The feeling that no matter wind and sand and waves you will stand through it.”

–The lyrics from “Crisis Fest” – “2017 we know/Reality’s one big sick show/Every day’s
a crisis fest” “Every day’s a missile test”, those two lines vividly describe the real
atmosphere that brought by the changes of society and global situation in the past two
years. Please tell us the background how you come up with the concept of this song.

Nick”The news cycle. The fear mongering. The daily scandals involving “you know who”.

–You guys haven’t made such political songs like ‘Crisis Fest’ that directly mentions
today’s social situations before and we assume that the Trump administration and the
circumstances brought by them had strongly influenced on you and songs. What was the most depressing moment you’ve experienced in the past two years? On the other hand, are there any memorable moments that gave you hope since we’re facing such difficult times?(e.g. women’s march / student speech on gun violence)

Nick “When we wrote “Crisis fest” we didn’t want to write a song just criticizing all the things we think our wrong. The song mainly focuses on the power of the new generation of Americans growing up today and a belief that we are going to change this country for the better. The rich, white, 60 year old men who run the country are not going to remain in power forever.”

–The line “Everything now is synthetic” from the song “Puppet Strings” is also very
impressive. What kind of feeling did you try to express in the song?

Nick”My intention was kind of a cynical John Lennon esq line. Love is a very pure and raw emotion, it’s so primal. In the modern age we are so far removed from nature, we still are wired with the same emotions ancient man had. It’s sort of a meditation on that.”

–On the first album’s cover, Jacob and Nick are looking into the camera while Julia was
looking off into the distance. In contrast, this time you all are looking into the camera
directly, which I felt very iconic. Could you explain the reason of the difference?

Nick”I think the stripping away of all the clutter and esoteric distractions was the primary metaphor. All the clocks and flowers are gone, it’s just us in the void staring out at you.”

Julia”We didn’t mean to re-create the composition of “Human Ceremony” when we shot the cover of “Twentytwo in Blue” but once it was done we felt that it was fitting. It does feel stronger, like we have nothing to hide, which definitely ties into the record.”

ニック「“I Was A Fool”はみんなで一緒に作った特別な曲。

でも今は“Oh No Bye Bye”かな。

–Would each of you pick the best track of this record and tell us why you like it.

Nick“I was a fool” was such a special song to write together. Always have a special place in my heart for the spur of the moment serendipitous ones.”

Julia”It changes all the time! Right now it’s “Oh No Bye Bye” because it is so strange.”

Jacob”One of my favorites on TTIB is Memoria. It took awhile to figure out but once we did it felt amazing. It has such a great pop to it. ”

–Lastly, please name some songs that make you feel “youth” and “ambition” that hark
back to your early period of your career. (Of course you guys still make me feel“youth” and “ambitious”!)

Nick”We were listening to “Forever dolphin love” by Connan Mockasin on repeat the summer we all became friends. That record had a massive influence on me in terms of lyrics, guitar sound, mood, intention. Massively influential to our first EP.”

Jacob”Is This It by The Strokes always makes me think back to early bean just because we were all listening to that record so much and would always sing along. ”

Julia”I think of the first Unknown Mortal Orchestra record, songs like “Ffunny Ffriends” make me feel young and think about all the work we’ve done together. Nick and Jacob really showed me UMO and I’m so thankful, they are one of my favorite bands!”
