LADYWORLD

Amanda Kramer

——You started out your career in theatre, and here we see a lot of long shot and wide angles scene in your film, which makes a perfectly good story often. How did you make the magic happen?

Amanda: I studied a lot of different types of theaters, like Kabuki and Butoh, which is all very theatrical, with very big, overwhelming and operatic sensations and moments of stillness. So it is about finding that balance between being postured and still, and then being wild and choreographed. For me, the most important thing is to get a wide shot so that the girls can be all over the stage and your eyes can go wherever the girls are going. And you are allowed to see all of their playfully dance across the screen. Rather than then just do all the close-ups where you can’t see all the movement and the body language.

——You studied”Distance Effect” for this movie.Would you tell us more about your approach about making the audience free of their own thought instead of sharing the empathy for the most of the time while viewing your work?

Amanda: I think it is so interesting to go against nature, to oppose what you are feeling, to challenge your viewer so that you show them an image and you don’t want to manipulate them into feeling the same thing as the character, you want them to maybe sit away from that, and see it from a bird’s-eye, or a God’s-eye view. It is so much more interesting to me. So, there were times in the script where I knew that how it had been shot traditionally and it may people cry or laugh. And I really wanted the actresses and the camera to feel the opposite way. So that you didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, so that you would have your own personal reaction. So, trying not to be manipulative and trying to step away from that and just let the audience feel whatever they are going to feel, from their own personal experiences, which is exciting.

——It is really a quite unique perspective to us, as the viewers.

Amanda:Yes. For sure.

――Can you talk about the casts,is there any chemistry? And how did you find them?

Amanda : I don’t believe auditions. It’s devil system for actors to put them through,so I just try make them to be comfortable,I just ask them to grab some coffee or talk on Skype so I can see they enjoying as a human being and see comes across as essentially as a human being.I just spend time with girls to see weird things they say and beat them with my personal questions.Atheena and I met fifteen years ago,and I just knew she will be good. All other girls came with recommendations, some of them are from cast each other, like Maya. She was good.I and girls had a phone call and they were charming, lovely, incredible, young women. And everyone came to set and they were similarly casual way,I think it was one of the chemistry.Everyday was totally joy, everyone was dancing, laughing, talking.Everyone are such a good friends, such a beautiful shock to me,they are involved to catch energy. They are good at acting but also they know what women can do,they are incredible.

——You didn’t choose to audition but used your own way choosing the cast. Would you tell us more about how you have made the decision and how the conversations you have had with the cast helped?

Amanda: So I think that if you are an intuitive persona and you have instincts, and you can be in a room with another person and you can feel their energy, and you can sense what they will provide to you as an actor. Even when just talking to them on the phone, you can hear how they are speaking and what they are laugh at and the jokes that they make. It is talent. So I have tried talking to each girl and just asking them about their lives, see what it is that has drew them to the characters and the script, and also ask them about what kind of movies and music that they liked. Just like finding out their own personalities and the lives that they lead, and choose the girls that fascinated me the most. And that I felt had memorable presents. So that when they are on screens, they really stand out.

——Yes. But the role could be very different according to the characters’ various personalities. So, how did you decide who plays which part?

Amanda: I wanted to be challenged by the actor. I wanted to be something that would surprise me. Sometime when you do something and you are in control of everything, your desire is to design every inch and every second of it, and I wanted to choose actresses who would do something different, who would have their own appeal. And I wanted to give the roles to those girls who can confine all of that aspects, and do something that would surprise me. So the best thing is to see that your actors are speaking your lines, but they are somehow shocking you. And you can’t believe the words that just came out of their mouth. So I was really just looking for girls who would be able to give their own flair.

——I see. And it is very important to have the whole cast sharing a common sense of what the film is about as well. How did you accomplish that?

Amanda: I feel like when you are hiring people, whether it is a crew or a cast, you want them all to have the vision and to know it so well and so completely. And so there were so many conversations and showing photos to each others, like fashion photos and films and paintings and then everyone will be able to start to understand what it is going to look like. And they would start bringing in their own photos, you know. For the make-up department, I showed them all the photos of Margiela from the runway. And I showed my hair stylist Yohji Yamamoto runway. And I said “Okay, we are going to try something really theatrical”. And as soon as they understand that, they would put the makeup on the girls and the girls just embody that. And it is really great when the whole crew understand the look and the energy and they are able to hit the one tone with you. So it is a lot of research and a lot of conversations. I think you forget in filmmaking that fashion has done everything. It is so bizarre and fun and alive and so filled with dance in theatre. And film is years behind. I think. I don’t know that if people in film are being bizarre as that. I think see something on runaway, it wouldn’t be as crazy when it is on a film. So I wanted to push it toward the avant-grade, what the fashion has conquered. So when we were discussing the details, we knew that we wanted something very fashionable.

――I see.

Amanda : I don’t really like naturalism very much and I like melodrama and theater.Unlike,Unreal.I asked makeup designer to draw the eyebrow and rips are very pronounced. Also I wanted to put them into costume to make act totally different. It’s like asking them to step in to opera.I think costume, makeup and hair is like the number one thing to let them push in to drama. And also,it’s really cool because they don’t look beautiful, they don’t look like sexually appeal something, I think that’s positive we’re gonna take that in different way not for looking beauty but turning it inside.

――Can you talk about music in the film?

Amanda : Yeah.I wanna whole score to be acapella, and I asked my friend Carly who has very beautiful voice to watch the footage. And she represented fear, anger, lust, sexuality, sensuality, inosence…she gave me a thousand of adjectives.I was like…you know”Star Wars”?which I don’t know very well, sorry. But you know everytime Stormtrooper comes and music is like, dah dah dah dadadah~!So,I need kind of like that certain theme. And she was like “I don’t know what you’re talking about but that’s what I got”,haha. It’s incredible thing to hear women’s voice,I mean that’s not only women’s voice but,no instruments,so pretty incredible thing.I felt very lucky for that. It’s cool, right?

――What is the time frame of the film from you went that happens to when they get discovered in that house?

Amanda : It’s the most difficult question to answer.Maybe a weekend,or a month?Something like between a weekend and a month, haha. It’s like for me,have you ever in a elevator? And you stuck in there? It’s kind of like that for me.So maybe it was only two or three days, but feels like a month.A barely a long weekend.Hmm,I’ve never say,or weekend, haha.

——The film is shot in 12-days, right?

Amanda: Yes. Very stressful. I was very tired. I think I aged might have aged a couple of years just by doing that. But when you do something that fast, everyone is so focused. So everyone comes to set studied and ready, and they all know their lines and monologues and they are just so prepared. It is fast and intense. But you immediately built off the intensity and energy and it helps you. When you finish a day, you know that “oh, only eleven days left” , and then “only ten days!”(laugh). So you have to be your best self and you have to be immersed. Very challenging. I remember the last day we shot, it was like a dream. It had been so fast and it almost felt like a dream, which I think is probably just how the film feels. Like a dream, or a nightmare.

——That is such a beautiful nightmare.

Amanda: Thank you so much for saying that!

――What was the inspiration of the last sequence?

Amanda : Are you ready for this deep cut? ”Micheal Crayton” is the one of the greatest film of all time,at the end of that film,he gets into a limo and he is in a back seat and it just drive I don’t know where and how long and why but shot just stays on him and it’s my most favorite part of the movie,it makes no sense it’s not necessary, but I feel it lasts forever.Film making people don’t let you do that, but I wanted the last scene to feel like just goes foever. In that scene,I was in the basement with girls and said “Okay,I’ll see you in seven minutes!”haha. But it felt like an hours.I just turned the clock on and seven min later I said”cut!”,then I found that they found their character have another evolution,in the final shot.I mean it was so beautiful,it matches to the whole movie.

——What do you think is the most important thing in the filmmaking industry nowadays, as everyone is just so into it?

Amanda: That is a good question. I think that personal experience has always been what makes art the best, and when you allow someone to make work that is meaningful to them, you get the most incredible result. So opening up your resources, your money, your funding and your programs to all voices is the most important thing. Whether that is under-represented women or globally speaking, the LGBTQ community, or students and younger people, it is really important to remember that we have always created narrative that is around the white-straight men, always. And we are all tired of that. I think even white-straight men are tired of that. For example, so if there is going to be a film in Japan, the first thing is that Hollywood would want to take it and buy it and make it for white people. And I hate that. I don’t understand why the Japanese version of the film shouldn’t be the one that everyone is going to be watching. So that I think it is the wrong side of the culture. We should have more Japanese film makers rather than just buying their work and re-making it for white people. I don’t think we should be doing that. We should open up for global cinema. It is more vivid and vibrant and we’d learn something rather than just stealing and processing and changing. That is what I think is important.

——That is a great answer.

Amanda:It is heartfelt, truly.

——So what would be your plan for the future?

Amanda: Oh I just finished this script and it is set in the 1950s, and it is about a young couple in New York City who where terrorized by a gang of boys. I am pretty excited about that, it is going to be a musical so it will be really strange. I just hope that I will be make work that is bizarre and wild, and I wish I would find audience who are willing to watch those kind of things.Because I don’t know how to do it any other way. I don’t know how to make Hollywood films (laugh). I will just keep making what I do.

——Hopefully you will! And we would like you to come to Japan in the future!

Amanda: Thank you! And yes, I would love to shoot a film in Japan. One of my favorite film is called The Pillow Book. It is a Peter Greenaway film and it is about a Japanese calligraphy artist and she falls in love with men by writing Japanese letters on their bodies. It is a beautiful. So ever since I have watched that film as a teenager, I felt that I have to make a film in Japan.

LADYWORLD
US / 2018 / 94 min / Color / English

A birthday party quickly devolves into chaos when a mysterious natural disaster traps eight teenage girls alone in a house buried under rubble. When they realize there is no escape – from the house and each other – they begin a series of destructive and paranoid power games that test their friendships, identities, insecurities, and eventually their grip on reality.

Writer-Director Amanda Kramer employs ambitious theatrical and cinematic genre techniques to probe a distinctly female, ‘Lord of the Flies’ power struggle in which eight girls with disparate, surprisingly violent personalities turn on each other, collapsing inward into a claustrophobic and psychologically deft chamber piece that utilizes every corridor, closet, and basement in the house to maximum hysterical effectiveness.

LADYWORLD features an ensemble of experienced young actresses using hyper-stylized dialogue and surreally heightened performances to memorable effect. Maya Hawke (daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, star of the upcoming season 3 of Stranger Things, also in Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon A Time in Hollywood’), Ryan Simpkins (Sherrybaby, Revolutionary Road), and Annalise Basso (Oculus, Captain Fantastic, upcoming TV adaptation of Snowpiercer) give particularly committed, standout performances.

Further plunging the film’s atmosphere into the surreal, an inspired soundscape would make Argento proud – veering from fantasy to reality – breathy, hallucinogenic, jazzy, full of teenage whispers and guttural, savage sounds.

A feminist teenage psycho-surreal version of the best of DePalma and Haneke, LADYWORLD dares to mercilessly probe the darkest reaches of the young female mind – exploring insecurity, desire, terror, and identity.

After world premiering at Fantastic Fest, LADYWORLD will screen at the BFI London Film Festival in October.

LADYWORLD is an auspicious and unforgettable debut.
