Observing people on the street day and night and analyzing how trends are generated, fashion director/blogger Black Cat H4 is a mysterious figure. Black Cat H4’s Instagram and Pinterest posts are reblogged all over the world where they discuss the latest movements and upcoming items.

– In the past few years, the term “Street-Lux” has become fully established. What do you think is the biggest cause for the merger of the so-called “luxury” layer with the originally separated segment in recent years?

H4: Although it is difficult to talk about it generally because many factors are involved, the collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Supreme in 2017, for example, caused an internet buzz, right? The collection reflecting the era became a big statement indicating the presence of Street-Lux.
The biggest reasons for the fusion of traditional luxury segment and Street-Lux (high-end street) segments could be that consumers are not buying traditional luxury goods as much as before. They do not want it as much as before due to the fact that the recent instability in the economy has made personal finances stringent. Some affluent people in Japan still wear couture clothes, although the number is considerably lesser than those in some western countries. Therefore, there are some people who don’t care about the prices. On the other hand, the fashion forward group maybe prefer to wear Ready-To-Wear clothes daily much more. They look out for real close and the street taste and are increasingly requesting for quality as well. On that point, Street-Lux is not as expensive as traditional luxury, so it’s easy to buy.
I feel that few people now buy luxury for lifetime like before. Also, somehow the word luxury itself seems old-fashioned in 2017; maybe the term Street-Lux was needed to define a new generation of fashion tribal.

– I see. It is also a definition of a tribe or a generation.

H4: In the market for the last few decades, the big move was only to improve the status of “street,” which is also related to the increasing quality of street and tribal fashion. The generation who grew up with the street culture is now in their 30s and 40s and can afford good quality items.
The fashion-forward people seem to be attracted toward the rough appearance of jeans and sneakers in the city, bringing quality apparel like Vetements, Gosha Rubchinsky, and Givenchy into the style. Even upper-class adults such as corporate CEOs’ suits are now in Street-Lux style. In other words, I believe that Street-Lux emerged in line with the consumers’ needs.
Also, over the last 10 years in Japan, due to the introduction of fast retails such as H&M, Zara, and Forever 21, even if the quality was not good, the “style” became affordable. The rotation of the trend cycle is fast and investment in one expensive thing is difficult.
As I personally like to support designers who are on the runway to pursue original creativity, I do not shop at the fast retails.

– So, which designers or brands are you looking into right now?

H4: Vetements and Off-White did amazing in 2016. However, there are lots of copy-cat brands out there, and I feel like I have had enough of them. Juun J and Yang Li collections were awesome in 2017. Also, Balenciaga is on the rise with Demna Gvasalia of Vetements as its artistic director. The shapes and the colors were amazing. ALYX is also a brand that has grown out of Street-Lux and the internet, and I hope to see it grow further. In Japanese brands, I am paying attention to Facetasm, Aoi industry, TTT, Comme Je Suis etc. I’m watching the movement of the brand depending on who the artistic director is, rather than on brand name; how it reflects the creativity and culture that can only happen now is the most fun thing about fashion. I think that this idea of breaking something and creating a now-era and a symbol to reflect it like in the music and arts, the fashion rule also is to break the rules and re-create.

– Please tell me something about the trends this summer.

H4: I would like to wear a power shoulder shirt like American football style tucked in, heels with a twist, a hat with a long tail belt, and so on. Also, adding a twist by a dangling long belt. I’m attracted to long gangling things.

– What items would you like to buy?

H4: A collection reflecting the essence of the current era “NOW”. Now I am buying things that are unique to 2017, like only can be made “TODAY” out of respect for the designers. Other than that, I am thoroughly striving for minimalism because I don’t want to have any extra things. Actually, when doing a job like this, the things I wear become increasingly simple, like Steve Jobs’ simple outfit. Because the inside of my head is full of new information at fast speed, I prefer to stick to simple clothes myself.

H4 Fashion x Internet Blog @neol.jp
