Nanoko Sato, both as a charming singer and a photographer, is collaborating with the tal-ented guitarist Riki Hidaka who is very good at illustrating chaos beautifully. Together as Nanaco + Riki Hidaka, they have released their new record called “Golden Remedy”. It is not necessary to classify the genre of this record since the sound is so fresh that it leaves a dream for the audience to imagine. Nanaco is Jan (jan and naomi / GREAT 3)’s mother and she met Hidaka as “a friend of the son” and she was seen as “the mom of a friend”. With a rarely close relationship like this, they have had an intriguing conversation regard-ing their completion of their music work and countless details behind the story. The story will definitely help build an inviting future towards their music pursuit.

──Hidaka

Hidaka「

——It is an important work of both of you for sure. How did you feel when it was fin-ished?

Nanaco: We finished the whole thing quite a while ago. It was probably about a year ago when we began the recording and we finished mastering about last November.

——Have you listened to it yourself after completing it for more than half a year?

Nanaco: No. I didn’t really listen to it that much. But I have started to play it on repeat when the release date was decided. It was quite different before and after the release. I got friends and musicians saying “wow” to me and it didn’t feel the same listening to the work after that. The sound and the words all require time to be understood profoundly and accepted. I had never thought about that before the release.

── How about you, Hidaka?

Hidaka: Well, I feel pretty …. I feel that it has become a solid thing, it’s not just the sounds but in various ways. It’s nice to have a work properly and I am quite happy with it.

── What do you mean when you say “in various ways”, can you be more specific?

Hidaka: Just like what Mamiko (Hidake calls Nanaco Mamiko) just said, we started the recording part just about a year ago and that happened in three different places. We first completed the basic recording in Tokyo. Did the guitar and another instrumental recording at another studio in Tokyo and then Mamiko finished the vocal part in a studio in New York. The process was kind of divided into different time periods and the feelings changed through the gap of the flowing time. And I am grateful to all people who supported us.

Nanaco: I couldn’t get a grasp of it before completing the whole album. I didn’t think of it that seriously when Hidaka said that he wanted to make an album together. It was when he got back from New York a year ago and saw the guitar of Kazuhiko kato in my house, he asked if he could play it. Then I liked how it sound and said “we might as wall make music together”. I couldn’t remember it well for quite some time lol

Hikdaka: You have totally forgotten.

─ ─ But, Hidaka vividly remembered.

Hidaka: I thought that I have mentioned it. I wanted to make an album rather than one or two songs together. That’s what I told her.

Nanaco: Since I couldn’t recall any of that, I was like “what is wrong with this person” lol Just saying that he finished a song and then started to play it roughly on the guitar was really funny. I thought that he didn’t know how to sing. As we got to talk with each other more, we had decided to record.Hidaka didn’t have much money and so he said that he will finish the recording with Reiji from Okamoto’s in one day.

Hidaka「

それで、友人のJesse(キーボード&コーラスとして参加したJesse Paris Smith)に訊いたらいろんなスタジオとエンジニアを教えてくれて。

Nanaco「

Hidaka「

Nanaco「

Hidaka「

Hidaka「

Nanaco「

——Have you listened to it yourself after completing it for more than half a year?

Nanaco: No. I didn’t really listen to it that much. But I have started to play it on repeat when the release date was decided. It was quite different before and after the release. ─ ─ The recording was quite basic?

Hidaka: Basically, I just recorded the drum and one guitar.

Nanaco: There are two punk boys when I first got to the studio. They recorded the songs without worrying about my vocal key or anything. Since I’ve come all the way to the studio, I hoped I’d like to session a song with them. And that was an English song called “I Will Marry You”. That was included in the album as well. I didn’t know what would happen after that.

Hidaka: I thought very carefully about our work.

Nanaco: We recorded in New York because I remembered that Hidaka was also in the city. My friend Jesse(Jesse Paris Smith), who participated as keyboard and chorus, told me about the studio and sound engineer stuff and we ended up using the one called Figure 8. Jesse’s chorus and keyboard were recorded along with the trombone by other musicians.

Hidaka: Of course I wrote the songs for Mamiko to sing but I hadn’t thought about about melody or anything. I thought that the melody will change with the lyrics and I didn’t want to mess it up I feel sorry that it might have caused some inconvenience.

Nanaco: Did you feel sorry for me?

Hidaka: Well, I am not so sure lol

Nanaco: Did you have another piece that was wonderful?

Hidaka: There you go.

Nanaco: You have always been like this lol Even if it had been confusing. I knew about you from the start.

Hidaka: You were pretty much pissed when we first met.

Nanaco: I remember when you came to my place.

Nanaco「

Nanaco「

Hidaka「

Nanaco「

Hidaka「

Nanaco「

——Why were you angry?

Nanaco: Because there were many friends of Jan and everyone was crouching together like cats and Hidaka was one of them.

——When did you first recognize that Hidaka played guitar?

Nanaco: I didn’t realize it for quite some time. He said that he was going to art schools. He gave Jan a painting by himself as a birthday gift. The reason I got mad was that he messed up Jan’s room. There were black paint everywhere!

Hidaka: It was blue, not black! And I didn’t mean to do that!

Nanaco: Anyway, that was why I got mad at him.

Hidaka: Jan was really drunk at that time and he said that he wanted to paint the whole wall blue.

Nanaco: You have done a pretty good job at that.

Hidaka: Yea it was pretty bad. Jan ended up sleeping on the rooftop and I yelled at him when I woke up and saw the painted wall. Even though Mamiko got angry, she gave me a banana in the end.

——That was a really interesting episode.

Nanaco: I thought that he might be hungry and gave him the banana even if I was pissed.

——You were really a good mom.

Hidaka: That was when I was about 20 years old.

Nanaco: Nothing really changed.

Hidaka: I am changing!

Nanaco: Then I saw Jan and Hidaka playing together and I thought they were doing their thing again. But then he asked me seriously about making music together.

Hidaka: Because Mamiko forgot about it. I was very happy when she praised me. She was usually mad at me.

Nanaco: I am glad to hear that.

Hidaka: I made up my mind to work harder the day she praised me.

Nanaco: I am glad that we worked together. We fight a lot but there is love, right?

Hidaka: (laugh)

Nanaco: This album was really made by a lot of wonderful musicians and sound engineers. They have really helped a lot. Especially the studio in NY and the sound engineer Philip Weinrobe. He is a very creative artist. Also Harris Newman helped a lot with mastering as well. He was very spiritual. I sent a message like a poem not technical things, but he understood what I really mean. He makes it sounds like magic. I was really impressed.

Hidaka: That had been very special. I have been living in NY for several years how-ever it was the first time for me that I realize it was like a dream-like place.

Nanaco「

Nanaco「Hidaka

Hidaka「

Hidaka「

──Hidaka

──Kurt

Nanaco「

——We probably have mentioned this before, so Hidaka first met Nanaco as Jan’s mother, right? When did you start recognizing her as a singer?

Hidaka: I think that was the time when we went to a concert in Shimokitazawa.

Nanaco: Who was there?

Hidaka: Mr. Nagata was there.I guess Jan also came and he let me listened to the old record before that.

Nanaco: But it was all solo work. You hadn’t listened to the whole album ( “Luminous love in 23”) from Cocteau Twins’s Label (Bella Union)during that time.

Hidaka: Yea but I very much love to hear it! I thought that Mamiko was pretty good when I first heard her work.

——Do you remember the time you talked to Reiji about how you wanted to make an album about two years ago?

Hidaka: I am making that right now. It is taking a lot of time.

Nanaco: Do you sing?

Hidaka: Yea I do. I want to do voice training.

Nanaco: For real?

Hidaka: Haha not really.

——Hidaka does not really want to do it.

Nanaco: I met a wonderful voice trainer in 1994. That person was a quite famous voice trainer for the Hollywood method. He met with Sherman in the jungle the time he went to Peru in South America. That Sherman could make things shine when he speaks the name of the subject. Like when he says “Apple”, the apple glows. The teacher was impressed by this episode. He thinks that people’s voice is just like an instrument. It is like a chimney and when the inside of oneself is dirty, it can’t come out with a beautiful voice. So he taught me to cry out to do clean up my voice. I understood it without saying any word. That teacher have also taught Kurt Cobain.

——Kurt is also doing voice training, wow.

Nanaco: Kurt was the best of them all. It was almost impossible. Kurt was really the most wonderful one according to that teacher.

——That was really an interesting story.

Nanaco: That was some real voice training. Kurt can sing like this because of that training directed by the teacher.

——You are saying that the teacher has somehow brought out the essence of a person and that is not only about skills, right?

Nanaco: Yea. I have taken ten classes with the teacher in LA. I became able to sing improvise after that. It is about controlling your mind and physics at the same time. That teacher was the first one and probably the last one who taught me that.

——That is not something that can be inherited.

Nanaco: Probably.

Hidaka「

Hidaka「

──4曲目の”I Will Marry You”のMVはNanacoさんがディレクションされていて。

Hidaka「

Nanaco「

Hidaka「

Nanaco「

Hidaka「

Hidaka「

Hidaka「

Nanaco「

Hidaka「

Hidaka「

——Let’s go back to the discussion of your album. The songs are all relating to one another, what do you think about that?

Nanaco: There are places where the worlds are linked while overlapping. I didn’t even realized that the lyrics are related to myself. I knew that at the end. Jesse and I went out the day before I returned to Japan and that was when I just finished recording in NY. We went by an antique accessory shop where we found many religious related accessories. I found a coin necklace that have the font “Father” or “Mother” inscribed. I took a picture of it and Jesse bought it for her mom. Jesse’s mom didn’t have a father when she was born, and Jesse’s father passed away when she was only seven. My dad passed away the year before the album was released. Three of us all have lost our fathers. Most of the songs in this album are all revealing the sense of losing someone that was important. That means “Golden Remedy”. That was really personal. Even though that has nothing to do with Hidaka, he helped and guided me through the process like an angel.

Hidaka: Are you complimenting me?

Nnaco: Gotta do it at the end or it seems to dark lol

Hidaka: I am honored.

——Even though it is a dreamy album, the sense of being touched and moved is felt. It is like exchanging signals across heaven and the real world.

Nanaco: You mean it is dreamy and it is also about being vividly alive. That was well said. It is truly lucky for us to see each other today.

——I don’t know how to put this right, but the last one “Swan” sort of gives out the sense that you are publishing it as if those are your last words.

Nanaco: I wanted to include that song anyhow. That was a really beautiful piece. Hidaka helped me a lot with it.

——What do you think about the album, Hidaka?

Hidaka: Just like what you said, it is dreamy but it is also about being vividly alive. We have been helped by a lot of people and the message is all in the music itself. We want the audience to feel our thoughts. I am really glad that we made it.

——The sixth song “Secret Rose” was quite surprising and fresh. The rhythm is also quite pop. What do you think about it as yourself right now, Hidaka?

Hidaka: There was a song called “Macbeth” in John Cale’s “PARIS 1919”. That was an hint, I guess. The twin drums on the right and the left are ringing in different phrases and I was pretty much influenced by it.So there’s something I really wanted to do.

——Guitar solos are also very impressive. It sounds like a happy voice of a baby screaming.

Hidaka: I am happy with it. The recording of the drums are done with Reiji and we only recorded once so we’re swamped. But when I worked with the sound engineer Philip (Weinrobe) we changed it to make it better. Philip really understood what I wanted.

Nanaco: Not only with this song. He made all the songs feel like as if those three dimensional songs are tuning into five dimensions. It is really creative and the recording was done perfectly.

——That is the session with the sound engineers, right?

Nanaco: Right. Without them it wouldn’t sound like this.

——You were directing to help make the MV for the fourth song “I Will Marry You” right, Nanaco?

Nanaco: I won’t say much about directing myself lol I had never thought about making my own MV but I felt like I could do it this time. I have asked Jan’s girlfriend Kali for help. On the day of the shoot, I couldn’t decide if it’s the sea or the mountain that I should go. We ended up in Chiba because it is close to the sea. I decided that I wanted to shoot there when I saw the roses down by the road. The main scenes are shot in Jan’s favorite place. I also did the editing part myself with Jan’s technical advise.

——Technically it also involved your identity as a photographer when you used malt-iple-exposures.

Nanaco: I just thought that it would look beautiful.

——Do you want to make more videos?

Nanaco: Of course I do. People who have watched the MV all told me to make more videos. I was in the University of New York studying films in 1990. I learned about productions there. Jan’s father also came to visit in New York from Paris. I didn’t finish my film but Jan was made-in-NewYork lol

Hidaka: I have heard about the story lol

Nanaco: I am really expecting my own movie now.

Hidaka: That’s great.

——That’s what you have realized while collaborating with each other.

Nanaco: That is love, right?

Hidaka: It is love indeed.

——What kind of musician do you want Hidaka to be, Nanaco?

Nanaco: I hope that you always play like yourself. I can’t say much about it since I don’t play guitar. But I want you to be an independent an proper musician. It is the most important thing. Don’t be spoiled in Japan when people call you talented. I wish that you can be an independent musician in the world. Jan is leaning many things as an independent musician. To take your own responsibilities and always think about how to send your music to audience.

Hidaka: That is also what I have been thinking about. I don’t know what to say. I will do my best.

Nanaco: I understand how it feels to say these things as to tell him to work hard. I myself can’t really do it well. Probably Jan will feel more relatable. This is love between us. I don’t say this to people that I don’t care.

——What do you mean when you say that you don’t know what to say, Hidaka?

Hidaka: Well. I am learning to everything about music and myself and I wanna continue to study. Not just guitar but everything else. It has nothing to do about how people call me, whether they think of me as talented or not. I know I’m not a genius but I will be constantly thinking about what Mamiko has said.

Nanaco: I myself can’t really accomplish all of that. But it is good to always be conscious of it. It is great to have released our work. It was a lot of fun making music. But, It is important thing to be open up. I want to send our music to people.

Hidaka: Right. That is going to take some time. I am okay with it.

——We are expecting the collaboration between you two, maybe in the future.

Nanaco: I knew you would say that. Did you just asked me that if I want to make another album with Hidaka again?

——Yes. I have just asked you that.

Nanaco: Of course. Right, Hidaka?

Hidaka: Let’s do it, may be someday.

Nanaco: Not may be someday.

Hidaka: I can’ really do it now, though.

Nanaco: Seriously. I don’t know how long I am going to live.

Hidaka: That’s what you are saying?

Nanaco: It’s fine. We will make it. I just got an idea of a new song this morning.
