「New York New Work(NYNW/2019年3月にルミネゼロで開催されたNYのデザイナーたちによるアートエキシビション)」のため来日を果たしたアムステルダム発のデザイナーデュオMaison The Faux。

Tessa de Boer「

–What is the concept of your art for this season?

Tessa de Boer: Our name is Maison the Faux and a big part of that name is about the house. And also at New York, New Work, we wanted to zoom in on the bedroom because that’s the most personal space of the house. We also wanted to create layers, a feeling like you’re moving in the house, we have this wallpaper there that consists of a lot of layers so it’s about layeredness. New coming out of older things. A little bit like you can read into it. We made the print designs with a 3D designer called Carol Civre from New York and she helped us to make the layers and underneath the layers is the Maison the Faux person, the Maison the Faux skin coming from underneath. So you can see tattooed skin and hands coming out, all the flaws, etc.

–Is there any particular reason you used duct tape and cardboard?

Tessa de Boer : We wanted to make it feel like a house, something that evolves that you can move into and be protected. It also signifies that your home does not necessarily have to be a fixed place. You can move around, you can transform it.

Tessa de Boer「14

Joris Suk「14

Tessa de Boer「

Tessa de Boer「14

Joris Suk「

–I’m very impressed with the contrast that you develop between everyday things and things you don’t find everyday. Where do you come up with these combinations?

Joris Suk : I think within all of our work, we worth with a lot of archetypes. So we use things that we know, but then transform them into something new. By reconstructing or deconstructing, we try to find a new purpose for things. I think it’s a very clear part of our DNA as designers.

–Do your backgrounds in costume design and hotel interior design have an effect on how you work?

Joris Suk :I believe hotel design, costume design, and all art in general connect. I find myself working to input my DNA into all of them.

–In the April issue, we are asking everybody about their experiences when they were 14 years old. Is there anything you particularly remember or want to share with us?

Tessa de Boer : 14! Then I’m really into Avril Lavigne probably. Wow, 14 years old. That’s a specific age. Middle school..

Joris Suk : I think that’s a really complicated age, because you’re trying to find yourself all the time. I think that was the biggest thing we were doing – we were constantly comparing yourself with others, asking “Who am I?” and “Where do I wanna go?” So that was a very complex and fruitful time.

–So you liked Avril Lavigne?

Tessa de Boer : Oh, yes. It was a difficult time, filled with very difficult music. I had the chain, and the nail polish and everything.

–When you were 14, did you think that you would both be here today as designers? Or be coming to Japan for something like this?

Tessa de Boer : At 14? No way.

Joris Suk : Maybe somewhere in a dream, but no, not at all.

Tessa de Boer「

Joris Suk「

Tessa de Boer「

Joris Suk「

Tessa de Boer「

Joris Suk「

Tessa de Boer「

Joris Suk「

–Do you remember at what age you started to think about becoming a designer?

Tessa de Boer :For me it came quite late, like when I was 18 I think. This was before I became very creative and doing a lot of creative projects in school. It came quite late but I realized that I want to go into fashion school. That was when I was 18.

Joris Suk : It’s safe to say the same here. I think from a young age, you start to create and build all your little bubbles and things, but being so specific like “I want to be a fashion designer” came maybe 2 years before I studied fashion. It was still very broad, the first thoughts were fine arts, but then in the end it became fashion because it was the most human art form.

–Who or what do you think contributed to your interests in art forms?

Tessa de Boer :I think it’s something in your personality that makes you look at those kinds of people. Like being really good at math.

Joris Suk : No, there’s not a specific someone. I think it was just an overall intriguing thing by identity.

–There most likely will be a lot of aspiring artists who will read this article who know the general direction they want to go in, but are missing some kind of push. Was there something that helped you realize your character?

Tessa de Boer :I think within the company, you just have to push yourself and try not to be insecure or afraid. Trust in yourself, trust in your creativity and your ideas and just go for it.

Joris Suk :Taking a risk.

Tessa de Boer :Yeah, taking a risk and having faith in yourself is really important. I think that’s how we did it.

Joris Suk :Yeah. Taking a risk and not playing sailing and to just do it.

–Is there anything you would like to inform the readers about? Future projects or news?

Tessa de Boer :Right before we came to Tokyo we just did a really big show in Amsterdam. So after Tokyo, we’re going to recover a little bit and then make plans. So at this moment, I would really recommend you watch the Amsterdam show on Youtube. It’s also the same concept as what we’re doing here so it’ll be interesting to watch.

–Are you going to get to tour around Japan?

Joris Suk : I already did some traveling. I’ve already been here for almost 10 days, so I did some sightseeing. Slept in the park, Yoyogi Park, haha.

Tessa de Boer :The weather was so nice, and so we were like “We’re just gonna lay down for a second…”

Joris Suk : We passed out for an hour. It was great. I feel really safe here and I think it’s beautiful.

Tessa de Boer :I love Tokyo.
