「境界ができる前に壊すこと」Interview with WINDOWSEN

ーーFirst of all, could you tell us how you feel about the upcoming party, “UNIQUE”? We would love to hear about how this collaboration came to be, and what you hoped to achieve through “UNIQUE”.

Sensen:I really love the theme, “UNIQUE”. For me personally, and also from a brand perspective, I believe “unique” is such an important element. Especially in fashion and in self-expression, being unique is at the core of everything. It’s where creativity starts. It represents not only individual style and attitude, but also reflects the brand’s identity. I am really happy and honoured to have been able to to be part of this event and celebrate all kinds of uniqueness.
Through “UNIQUE”, I hope to encourage and inspire more people to express their own individuality. Everyone has something special within them, and I believe design and events like this, can be a powerful way to celebrate and empower that uniqueness.

ーーThis event offers a remarkable opportunity to experience the collaboration between Tokyo’s iconic talents and your creations. Could you tell us how the costumes were selected?

Sensen: Yes, it’s truly exciting to see how Tokyo’s creative energy blends with our vision. When selecting the outfits for them, I really focused on items that reflect individuality and bold expression, something that feels both personal and powerful.

ーーI’d love to ask you some questions about your work. Your work seems to go beyond and merge elements that are often seen as opposites —not only in terms of gender, but also in how it combines futuristic themes with primitive qualities like insects or plants, or contrasts between the real and the virtual, and even opposing colors. Where do you think this ability to blend such contrasts comes from within yourself?

Sensen: My design just reflects how I see the world. I like blending different elements that feel intuitive to me. And most of my inspiration comes from films I like, and I have been always imagining what it would be like if there were a WINDOWSEN Universe, and
that’s where most of my ideas and design comes from.

ーーYour work also seems to expand the boundaries of fashion design by fusing it with other disciplines such as performance, virtual media, and more. How would you describe your design philosophy?

Sensen: To me, creativity has no borders. I’m not interested in staying within one discipline : fashion, films, performance, virtual space, games, music. They all flow together. My design philosophy is to break boundaries before they even exist.

ーーHow important is storytelling in your collections? Do you think of them as narrative works?

Sensen: Storytelling is everything to me. Film has a huge influence on my work. If you have seen my shows, you will know I approach them like budding a cinematic universe. Everyone involved, from my team to the models, media, celebs, KOLs, even the audience, including myself, we all becomes a character in that universe. It’s more than outfits, or the looks, it’s about creating a universe that you can feel, dream and get lost in.

ーー’When you work with different people, you get completely different feedback. I enjoy the effect of this uncontrollable.’ I read this in one of your interviews, and it made me feel that for you, fashion is not just about creation, but also about dialogue. What kind of inspiration do you gain through your interactions with people?

Sensen: I am thankful for all kinds of feedback, good or bad. I understand that we can’t create something that everyone will like, and I don’t try to. I prefer to make bold work that sparks connection and thoughts. That matters more to me than just being liked.
“For the inspiration I gain through my interaction with people…” I would say sometimes it pushes my thinking forward.

ーーYou’ve collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Madonna, Lady Gaga, Doja Cat, and BLACKPINK. What kind of inspiration or feedback do you gain through your dialogues with such talented artists?

Sensen: Thanks for noticing my work. I am very grateful to everyone who’s wore WINDOWSEN.
I get this question a lot, and I always say: they dressed in WINDOWSEN, I didn’t dress them. They are icons who choose to express their own voice and style with us, and that means everything to me. The inspiration they give me is how boldly they own who they are. It reminds me to stay true to my vision and keep pushing boundaries.

ーーHow do you hope people feel when wearing WINDOWSEN?

Sensen: I want them to feel bold, surreal, empowered and limitless.
Most importantly, it’s about being true to who you are and expressing themselves freely.

ーーYou mentioned before that you were planning to move to Paris — are you living in Paris now?I think that the atmosphere of the place where we live shows up in our work more than we might expect. So has living in Paris brought any changes to your creative work?

Sensen: I move between Paris, Shanghai, and sometimes Tokyo now. The cultural clash is great, but I always live far away from city centre, so the atmosphere doesn’t really touch me. I stay in my own world.

ーーWhat’s next for WINDOWSEN—any upcoming collections, collaborations, or creative experiments?

Sensen: I have a big project coming up at the end of the year, and a couture show in Paris early 2026. I am really excited about it. I’d love to do a show in Tokyo too, but no solid plans yet. Stay tuned.
