――7月には2度目の武道館公演を控えてますが、今後のバンドの目標は？
川上「インディーズ時代の最初の方は誰からも注目されていなかったし、華々しい作品デビューを飾ったわけでもなかったので、アピール出来る場所でみんなを振り向かせるために、『ナンバーワンになりたい！』っていうことを繰り返し言ってきたし、ライヴでも勢いに重きを置いてきたんですよ。いま振り返ってみて、それはそれでよかったと思っているんですけど、武道館でライヴをやったり、ようやく、みんなに振り向いてもらって、そこからさらに多くの人にアピールするためには、音楽の中身ですよね。その質の向上を重視していかないとなって思ってますね」
――つまり、バンドとして、さらに成長、成熟していきたいと。
川上「フェスの規模を考えると、日本のロック好きは恐らく5万人くらい。そこからさらに色んな人に聴いてもらうには、それだけ届きやすいものが求められると思うんです。それは周りに迎合するということではなく、あくまで自分がいいなと思う音楽を広く提供したいんです。その課題は多くのロック・バンドが試行錯誤していることでもあるんですけど、僕らはロックだけじゃなく、ポップなものも同じように愛しているし、先日も台湾ででんぱ組.incや仮面女子が出るイベントにトリで出させてもらいましたからね（笑）。だから、壁を作らずに、僕らなりに出来ることをやっていきたいと思っていますね」
――You will be having your second Budokan concert in July. Could you tell us about your future goals?
“When we were still an indie band we pretty much went unnoticed and didn’t even have a spectacular debut or anything like that. For this reason, in places where we could get people’s attention, we’ve kept saying over and over that we wanted to be ‘Number one!’ and have always put a lot of emphasis on momentum when it came to live concerts. Looking back now, that was a good thing to do. We had a Budokan live concert and finally got people to notice us. But to get more people to understand us, I think now it’s time to work on the music itself. We need to focus on improving the quality of our music.”
――In other words, you need to grow as a band and become more mature?
“Given the scale of the festival, I would say there are about 50,000 rock fans in Japan. To get more people to listen to our music, we probably need to make it more accessible. I am not talking about catering to everyone’s needs; I mean we need to promote the music that we like to make to a wider audience. I think many other rock bands are faced with the same dilemma and are trying different ways to overcome it, but for us it’s different, because we love rock and pop to an equal extent and we have even participated as entertainers in events featuring DenpaGumi.inc and Kamen Shojo in Korea (lol).”
